Machinists
Join a world-class team in as an Machinist.
Key Responsibilities:
- Exhibits and applies solid understanding of prototype set ups and machining as well as knowledge of Labsphere machine tools, controllers and finish requirements;
- Reads blueprints, sketches, drawings, manuals, specifications, to determine dimensions and tolerances of finished part, sequence of operations, and setup and tooling requirements. Can read and manipulate CAD files (Solidworks preferred) to clarify product requirements.
- Demonstrates advanced set-up, understanding of sequence of operations, decision-making and troubleshooting capability to provide alternate approaches to any machining situation;
- Ability to design and fabricate parts, fixtures and tools for specific jobs and calculate speeds and feeds, depth of cut, proper coolant for the different materials used at Labsphere;
- Verifies conformance of finished workpiece to specifications, using the appropriate measuring equipment. Understands how to use optical comparator height gauge, sine plate, indicators, micrometers, verniers, depth mics, bore gauges, etc;
- Measures, marks, and scribes’ dimensions and reference points on material or work piece as guides for the lay out of subsequent machining;
- Selects, aligns, and secures holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials on machines such as mills, lathes, and/or any other Labsphere machine equipment;
- Calculates and sets controls to regulate machining factors such as speed, feed, coolant flow, and depth and angle of cut, or enters commands to retrieve, input, or edit computerized machine control media;
- Starts and observes machine operation to detect malfunctions or out-of-tolerance machining, and adjusts machine controls or control media as required;
- Verifies conformance of finished work piece to specifications;
- Sets up and operates machine on test run to verify accuracy of machine settings. Updates program to latest revision for pre-programmed parts as needed;
- Verifies dimensions by using inspection equipment such as micrometers, verniers, gage pins, pitch micrometers, etc;
- Meets standard times on routers and reports to supervisor when deviating from standard time;
- Reports to supervisor any conflict or problem that will interrupt the flow of work in the Machine Shop work environment;
- Follows Labsphere’s safety policy in the machining area;
- Mentor and/or train new or junior employees as required;
- Confers with immediate supervisor or other machinists if supervisor is unavailable to resolve machining problems.
Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent, plus eight to ten years related Machine Shop experience or an equivalent combination of apprenticeships, training, education and hands on experience.
- Ability to apply algebra, geometry, and trigonometry in practical situations, as well as functions, percentages, ratios, and proportions.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
Assemblers
Join a world-class team in as an Assembler. This position can work Monday-Thursday, 10 hour shifts, or Monday-Friday 8 hour shifts.
The project is a basic, no experience necessary, assembly work for our sister company Avo Photonics.
The work entails using glass fiber cables and inserting them into an electronics box.
Using computer and timeclocks to log time, read emails, check work instructions
Read work orders, follow work instructions and/or sample assemblies, or follow verbal instructions regarding work to be performed
Assemblers are responsible for inserting and cleaning fiber optic fanouts.
Cleanliness and preservation of components must be maintained along with the final appearance of the component.
Assemblers for this position only will be required to wear PPE equipment including but not limited to gloves.
Position and align parts in specified relationship to each other in jig, fixture, or other holding device.
Use common manual tools to perform assembly tasks.
Assemble and attach hardware such as glass fibers cables, caps, clamps, knobs and switches to assemblies
The employee will be required to maintain good housekeeping, safety, and organizational habits.
The employee will be required to wear appropriate attire.

Spray Painter / Coating Technician
Join a world-class team in providing our customers with optical systems and components as our Spray Coating Technician. This exciting role will provide an opportunity to manufacture products for customers in several industries, including aerospace & defense, cosmetics & sun protection, lighting, automotive & transportation, image sensors, medical & life science, consumer electronics, telecom, and industrial photonics.
The Spray Coating Technician is responsible for working within a team to provide quality products that are in compliance with applicable standards, regulations, and procedures.
Key Responsibilities:
- Prepare/mask surfaces for sandblasting and coating per written procedures
- Spray optical coatings on products
- Remove masking and coating as per drawings or instructions
- Follow work schedule per the Coating Lead’s instructions
- Inspect work while performing these processes to ensure quality
- Operate sandblaster and random orbital sanders per instructions provided
- Accurately report time worked and completed via paperless system
- Precisely measure liquids and solids to mix coating per written procedures.
- Utilize 5-gallon pressure fed, as well as gravity fed LVMP spray gun to complete jobs.
- This position requires you to handle toxic chemicals and hazardous waste (paint waste). Use of proper PPE is required, including wearing a respirator while spraying.
- Company paid travel may be required occasionally to perform offsite work.
Requirements:

- High school diploma or equivalent
- Strong organizational and time management skills. Ability to work effectively in a multitask environment under deadlines. Must work independently and show initiative.
- Ability to actively participate in Labsphere’s continuous improvement program.
- Ability to maintain personal and common work space housekeeping at an acceptable level.
- Ability to effectively perform all of the above mentioned essential job functions.
- High level of attention to detail.
