Manufacturing Engineer
The individual in this position will develop and document the manufacturing and assembly process to be used to produce Labsphere’s products [includes creating methods and time standards]. S/he will review new and existing products and recommend changes to improve manufacturability. S/he will also troubleshoot problems on the manufacturing floor. This individual will be relied upon to keep Labsphere current in new manufacturing process and technology.
Essential Job Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities
- Research and recommend changes to design, and components of the new product, that could make its production more profitable, easier, or increase the quality or value of the product
- Apply design for manufacture and assembly principles. This may require building product on the production floor and working with assemblers to learn about existing products
- Work with Development Engineering to enhance the manufacturability of new products. Emphasis will be on maximizing commonality of parts, processes, required tooling and training consistent with providing quality products that meet or exceed customer expectations
- Transition new product from design to manufacturing
- Evaluate and recommend outsourcing opportunities and interface with vendors for process capability, price, quantity and quality
- Recommend, design and obtain required assembly and testing fixtures and tooling. Recommend changes in procedures and tooling to improve product quality and manufacturing efficiency
- Evaluate procedures in manufacturing and ensure that useful and proven techniques are used
- Ensure product costing is kept in line to achieve established gross margins. Research and suggest ways to bring under-performing gross margin product up to established margins
- Develop and source packaging for new product and create packaging procedures;
- Structure BOMs for proposed manufacturing; present findings and justifications to management or other groups
- Write ECRs/ECOs
- Assess and implement in-process testing or alignment
- Create assembly methods and routers, and design assembly fixtures
General Requirements (Education, Experience, Attributes of Successful Candidate)
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent; or five years experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

- This position requires the ability to communicate well in English. - This position requires the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals, draw and interpret bar graphs or other visual representations of information as well as understand the cost implications to margins and budgets of a planned action.
- This position requires someone with the ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. This individual must be capable of using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
Coatings and Materials Engineer
Summary: Develop the next generation of proprietary optical coatings and materials for a wide range of applications and emerging industries. Growth opportunities in this role offers the chance to develop products, processes, and a laboratory and team.
Role: In this role, the candidate will develop and maintain coating and material composition, define manufacturing processes and application procedures required to achieve consistent, high-yield products. The candidate should be driven to continuous improvement in performance, efficiency, and cost reduction, while maintaining world-class quality. This role requires a high degree of hands-on testing and development work, and interaction with the manufacturing technicians and testing staff.
Qualifications: This position requires a creative thinker with a positive, can-do attitude that constantly drives to understand the performance of the materials and develop new materials for advanced applications.
This position requires 5+ years of engineering experience, developing materials and the associated production and application processes. The ideal candidate will be self-motivated to develop a deep understanding of the composition and performance of reflective coatings including PTFE and BaSO4 based materials.
An understanding of materials science, materials processing, process engineering, and/or chemistry is needed to be able to modify and create the chemical constituents required to produce a series of reflective coatings with predictable properties.
Education: BS/MS/PhD in Engineering, Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry
